Analysis

Queen of the South and Motherwell get their season underway with a game in the Scottish League Cup. Who will come out on top?

Queen of the South will start their 7th consecutive season in the Scottish Championship after they were able to maintain their place in the 2nd division last season after going through the relegation play-offs.

Queens missed out on safety by a single point at the end of the league campaign, and the Dumfries side received a shock as they lost the first leg of the first play-off game to Montrose, although they were able to win the return leg with ease. The following tie saw Queen of the South face no real problems, as they were able to easily defeat Raith Rovers 3-1 in the first leg, which was followed by a goalless draw.

Queens come into their first competitive game of the season ill-prepared, as their first friendly with Airdrieonians was cancelled. They were able to play against East Fife and beat them 2-1, but it doesn’t take away the fact that the squad won’t have had a lot of game time.

Motherwell will go into the 2019/2020 season with the high hope of a repeat performance of last year. They are, by no means, not a relegation candidate, but the loss of Jake Hastie to Rangers and David Turnbull’s long-term injury may have a ripple effect at the club.

The Steelmen finished 8th in the Scottish Premiership, and they were unlucky not to have finished in the top half of the table if it weren’t for St Johnstone, Hearts and Hibs above them. Stephen Robinson’s side were also unable to recreate their success in both cup competitions, going out in the quarter-finals of the League Cup and losing in the Fourth Round of the Scottish Cup.

Their pre-season has consisted in a huge 4 games since the end of June. That initial game ended in a 1-0 defeat to Crusaders, but Motherwell would go on to win their next trio of games, keeping a clean sheet in all of them too.

Motherwell look to be the clear favourites for this game, despite having lost arguably their 2 best players for this tie. The Steelmen’s pre-season preparation also seems to dwarf Queens’, but the home side could still cause an unlikely upset, as it is still too early on in the season for any one team to have stability across the board. We’re going to back Motherwell to get the season off to a positive start with a narrow 1-0 win here.
