17 JULY 2019 The Scottish League Cup : Montrose vs St Johnstone

Date : 17 JULY 2019
Time : 02 : 45 PM
Match : Montrose vs St Johnstone
St Johnstone will travel to Angus on Tuesday as they are hosted by Montrose at Linkin Park in the 2ndScottish League Cup group stage game. Can the Saints take all 3 points?
Montrose followed up their 2017/2018 League Two winning campaign with another impressive finish in the division above. The Gable Endies were able to finish 4th in League One with an impressive 51 points, meaning that the club had the chance to play in the play-offs and try to win consecutive promotions.
Stewart Petrie’s men did well in the first leg of their tie with Queen of the South, defeating the Championship team 2-1 at home. However, the Angus club would be on the receiving end of a 5-goal thrashing, in great part thanks to a Stephen Dobbie hat-trick. Nonetheless, it was a good season overall for Montrose.
Their pre-season preparations have been mixed, too. Mo played 3 friendlies, winning twice as they beat Formantine United 2-1 and then Arbroath 3-2. They also suffered a 2-1 defeat at the hands of Cove Rangers, as well as a 4-1 thrashing off of Championship winners Ross County in their opening game of the Scottish League Cup.
St Johnstone will be eager to better their previous league campaign going into the new season. Tommy Wright’s side finished 7th in the Premiership table and were battling it out with Hearts to make it into the top half of the split, but the Edinburgh side ultimately got the better of the Saints.
St Johnstone also made it all the way to the quarter-finals of this tournament, where they would get eliminated by eventual winners Celtic, although an outstanding performance from Zander Clark almost denied the reigning champions the win.
Wright’s side have had a lot of preparation for this game, as they have had a lengthy pre-season before playing their first competitive game of the season. A defeat to Edinburgh City as well as a 1-1 draw with Glentoran didn’t really inject the fans with much confidence, but the Perth club eventually won their following two games- a 4-2 win at Linfield and a 3-2 victory over Greenock Morton. However, the Saints lost again over the weekend with a 3-1 loss to Inverness CT.
This will be St Johnstone’s first competitive game of the season, so the players could still have some cobwebs, despite playing various friendlies beforehand. Montrose were unlucky not to make it to the Championship and will want to have a decent cup run, which could be aided by a positive result here against the Perth side. We’re going to back the visitors to win here and for both teams to score, with a final result of 3-1 to the Saints.
