Davis Files : Happy Valley Preview - 17th February 2021

Brett Davis provides exclusive preview of Happy Valley races.

Race 1

#8 Wins All is a big striding type who's been consistent but is yet to win over the 1200m. That statistic is most likely to change following tonights event with Zac Purton in the saddle and what appears to be very mild opposition. This Testa Rossa gelding has been raced sparingly with lameness issues to his right front leg earlier in his career, however that's a distant memory now with his form finding the frame his last four starts. The draw looks tricky on paper but there's more foreseeable pace than meets the eye which could open up an opportunity to find cover behind the speed. What ever the case early he's the clear on top pick and if blessed with luck in running should be to good.

#2 A La King creates interest after arriving in Hong Kong towards the end of last season. The three year old son of Denman steps up to the plate for his career debut after acclimatising well. His latest track work see's him looking nicely tuned and he's now ready to go to the races following four official trials, three conducted at Conghua. Its an interesting opening event to start the night and I am confident he'll find something in the stretch when placed under race pressure.

#1 Just Not Listening boasts the most victories over this distance and has been dropping steadily in the ratings over the past twelve months. This is by far the easiest contest he's tackled in sometime and the combination of the drop in class and positive draw make him quite attractive. The turf surface is his biggest obstacle with all wins achieved on the dirt but it's likely the lack of depth allows him to makes his presence felt.

#7 Gallant Legacy is a six year old Redoutes Choice gelding resuming and another that's had his fair share of soundness issues. Although he is yet to win first up and has just the one victory to his name his early tactical speed should see him position well. There's certainly question marks over race fitness after a long break but his body weight is not far off parity to when he last won.

#10 Dollar Reward is a model of consistency and another with a sound record but on the all weather surface. However, in his defence he's finished in the minor placings on eight occasions here at the Valley so he's not completely hopeless under these conditions. He generally gives his all and he got to within half a length off winning last start. But it is likely he'll spot them a start from the draw.

Race 5

#3 Gift Of Lifeline is more than a handy galloper that's proven in class 3 and won over a variety of distances. Initially this season he took time to get motivated but he's found the line recently and just missed the placings last start following a muddling mid race pace. This contest is another winnable race for the Tony Millard trained runner and a frantic pace shall enhance his chance. Jockey Vincent Ho just has to steer sweetly through the openings and he's right in it.

#1 Savaquin jumps up in the ratings following a last start victory which was long overdue. The son of Savabeel is looking for more ground ultimately and it's likely he'll need every bit of the mile again tonight. Zac Purton jumps aboard with Moriera serving a suspension and the draw looks to be no issue what's so ever. He's still lightly raced and is the stand out runner from this event with scope to go higher.

#6 Smoothies is expected to roll forward from barrier one and take up the lead. If he finds rhythm and doesn't cop pressure through the first 600m he'll fight hard all the way to the line. His recent leading effort was full of merit and they only picked him off late after being well rated in front.

#5 Looking Great is one of two runners for trainer Frankie Lor and this fellow has further improved in the mornings since his two race starts. He battled strongly on both occasions against good opposition and can certainly be competitive. Two trials at the city circuit are a major positive as experience at this track is crucial. With one trial also conducted over the full circuit distance of 1700m.

#10 Farshad drops to a rating of sixty one after starting the season ten points higher but is ultimately searching for the drop in grade. It's clear his form and rating at present look inferior to his rivals but he stays under notice from the inside draw. Karis Teetan could easily spark him into action with a vigorous ride early and he's always possessed the ability.
