Davis Files : Sha Tin Preview - 26th September 2021

Brett Davis provides exclusive preview of Sha Tin races.

Race 1

#3 Zacian had excuses first up and I'm prepared to go in again. The run under his belt is only going to bring him on and the draw can only be of benefit. This is just his second run for the Danny Shum stable and the addition of a tongue tie first up was an error, and it's been promptly removed. The engine he possess is big enough to win class 4 and with Vincent Ho aboard I'm sticking with him on an each way basis.

#5 General Trump led from a wide gate first up and although tiring was good in defeat. Returning to 1200m shall hold him in good shape as he was clearly in front a furlong out. Granted there'll be more pressure early to absorb but he should be given his chance.

#1 Iron King won second up last season over this course and distance with Zac Purton behind the wheel. He's always struggled in races deeper than class 5 and Trainer Dennis Yip has been eyeing off this race for a while. Zac Purton has been along for the ride and they looked well in a quiet lead up trial.

#10 For Fun's Sake is a horse tipped early last season but his inconsistency is a fine example of gallopers in this grade. A change of stable towards the end of last term instantly produced a swing in form and I'd be keeping him safe first up.

#2 Shanghai Power won well at the Valley for Moriera who's seemingly been bumped by 5lbs claimer Victor Wong. Moving from the 1000m at Happy Valley back to 1200m at Shatin is a challenging adjustment but he did cope with it well back in July.

Race 7

"The Celebration Cup"

#2 Might Giant elevated himself to his highest mark by winning the "Group 2 Chairman's Trophy" last season, which followed gallant victories first and second up. He'll be tested by the 126lbs today but his preparation and trials have been terrific. A relaxing off season at Conghua has been thoroughly enjoyed and he's ready to go first up. He'll race handy, if not lead, then prove difficult to overhaul.

#3 Sky Darci put his name up in lights by winning the "Hong Kong Derby" back in March. The "Hong Kong Cup" in December is likely the goal through the first half of the season so it shall be interesting to see where he's at. Like most of the top liners time away at Conghua during the off season was appreciated, with just one trial undertaken. He's superb at all distances and when fresh he's been outstanding.

#1 Southern Legend finish 4th behind superstar "Golden Sixty" in this race last year carrying 128lbs. The now 9yo had an incredibly consistent campaign thereafter and can never be dismissed. He'll be better placed in set weight races up and coming but his presence is always intimidating. Now rated 127 he's currently 2IC to Hong Kong's outright Champion Golden Sixty.

#4 Champions Way has been a tremendous galloper from day one winning 6 of his first 7 starts. He's rarely missed a cheque and dead heated with "Beauty Generation" for 2nd in this very race last year. He may need the run, judged on his trial and the fact he's older, but don't underestimate him.

#5 Duke Wai ran a cracker first up against "Naboo Attack" and is worthy of inclusion. He's hasnt been tested over 1400m to often but has the stamina to run it out. His form against "Courier Wonder" last campaign was fantastic and I wonder if he might just cause a few nervous moments for favourite backers.

Selections : 2,3,1,4,5

Race 8

#1 Ima Single Man appeared a very capable 2yo when undefeated in Perth/Australia but took time settling in to Hong Kong. He raced 12 times last season but it wasn't until the last 6 weeks that he began to find form. He returned first up with a fast finishing 2nd behind progressing "Gluck Racer" and in the process reeled off a 43.94 final 800m. The pace today looks suited to his style and it's going to take a good one to hold him out.

#5 Packing Victory is that aforementioned good one thats going to provide the resistance. He's so far undefeated from 2 starts but has the scope, size and maturity to reach greater heights, and quickly. He's up against better horse today in class 3 but the barrier provides him every opportunity to again win.

#3 Five Elements has been in work since April and appears ready to run well first up. He's trialled on 3 occasions, once last season and twice this season, with Moriera on his back every step of the way. He was a Group 2 winner as a 2yo and the proof shall be in the pudding as to where he fits in.

#8 Rock Ya Heart was sent out the ruffy first up and almost caused a boil over. Time away in Conghua during the off season has been a blessing and what he achieved first up, without a trial, was very encouraging. Vincent Ho had only sat on him once prior to that run but he's been aboard every gallop since.

#6 Diamond Brilliant has been around for a while and was peaking at the end of last term. He's got tremendous gate speed, plus size, and can bully anything wishing to contest him for the lead. A couple of trials have prepared him nicely and when it's fighting time he's generally all in.

Selections : 1,5,3,8,6

R9 - 5,4,14,3,6

R10 - 1,5,3,9,10
