Karis Teetan caps off brilliant year with 300th Hong Kong winner

The Mauritian has enjoyed the best season of his life and fittingly brought up the milestone on the final day

Jockey Karis Teetan put the perfect finishing touches on what was already a breakout season at Sha Tin on Sunday, notching his 300th winner in Hong Kong.

The Mauritian rode a brilliant treble on the final day of the season, capping off a remarkable year which ended with 84 winners and a maiden Group One victory – a clear career best.

Teetan brought up his 300th winner in the Class Four All You Wish Handicap (1,400m) with the Caspar Fownes-trained Have Fun Together and then wasted no time bringing up numbers 301 and 302 with Circuit Three and Happy Sebring for Tony Cruz later in the day.

A visibly excited Teetan stood up in the irons and saluted to the crowd after Have Fun Together’s victory where he flashed home from last to win by one-and-a-half lengths.

“It’s been a great season, it is a nice number to achieve,” Teetan said. “To finish off like that really put the cherry on top.

“All the help I have been getting, the support from trainers and owners has been really special.

“It’s my best season here in Hong Kong but it doesn’t stop here, you always like to improve and get better.”

Teetan has been one of the mainstays of the term, with no jockey having more rides than his 693.

His total of 84 winners sees him finish third behind champion Zac Purton and Joao Moreira, bettering his fourth-placed finish last season with 52 winners.

“It’s a difficult place to have one winner so to have so many winners in a season, behind Joao and Zac is incredible,” he said.

Fownes was delighted to provide the milestone winner for the popular Teetan.

“I love Karis – he is a beauty. He’s got a heart of gold, he’s such a hard worker and deserves all the success he gets,” Fownes said. “I’m so happy he got [his 300th winner] on my horse. He is very well-liked in Hong Kong.”

After getting the call up from champion Australian trainer Chris Waller to ride Down Under, Teetan will also represent Hong Kong in the World All-Star Jockey Series in Japan in August – adding further recognition to his outstanding season.

“They have asked me to come over and I think it’s a good opportunity because these things don’t come often so I will take it and try my best,” he said.

“I have been to Sapporo so I know that track which will help.”

The likes of Moreira, Purton and Douglas Whyte have all won the event while representing Hong Kong.
