PSG 0-1 Lyon: Three Things We Learned

Paris Saint-Germain fell to their seventh defeat of the year thus far at the hands of old rivals Lyon last weekend.

While they may be seen as one of the best teams in world football, and certainly the best in France, that wasn’t the case for Paris Saint-Germain on Sunday. They simply weren’t able to get going in this encounter with Olympique Lyonnais and eventually, the visitors managed to grind out a huge victory.

Today, we’ll be taking a look at a few of our biggest takeaways from a dramatic night of action.

The Messi problem?

Both during the game and at the full time whistle, Lionel Messi’s name was met by whistles from the home faithful. It certainly wasn’t his best performance in a PSG shirt but in equal measure, it does seem a bit harsh for someone considered to be the GOAT. Who knows, perhaps the constant rumours surrounding him and a possible return to Barcelona in the summer have something to do with it.

Lyon’s patience

They had 10 shots throughout the night, but Lyon also had just 38% possession from beginning to end. This was the kind of game where they knew they had to become masters of the dark arts once again, and in truth, that’s probably what paid off for them. They’ve had a poor campaign up to this point but if there was ever a result to help turn things around, it’ll be beating PSG on their own turf.

PSG’s troubles

As noted previously, PSG have already lost seven games this year. That’s not exactly the kind of form a team of this quality should be having, especially when they’re viewed so highly on the world stage. It really does feel like their inability to get the job done in Europe is starting to harm their league form, and with Lens and Marseille just six points behind, they need to start looking over their shoulder.
