The superstar free agents who are still searching for a new club
As the end of the summer transfer window looms and time to complete the final signings ticks away, some managers from across Europe could be casting an eye to those big names who are still looking to be snapped up.
While the window might slam shut on October 5th, the current financial situation has seen a number of players run down their contracts and make themselves available to move on a free.
So, on a stacked list that includes a World Cup winner, one of Europe’s most prolific strikers and a former England international, who are the superstars still seeking a new adventure sooner rather than later?
While PSG might have made it clear that they were keen to extend Edinson Cavani’s stay in Paris earlier in the year, the 33-year-old elected to seek a new adventure and it is no surprise that he has been linked with some of Europe’s elite.
Although the Uruguayan marksman might not have featured in PSG’s failed Champions League run following on from the enforced break, he did record 22 goals for the French giants last season and helped Les Parisiens lift six Ligue 1 titles during his tenure.
However, while it might have been reported that Los Blancos were eyeing up the possibility of bringing Cavani to the Bernabéu, it appears that their crosstown rivals have moved into pole position to secure his signature.
Despite already bringing in Luis Suarez in a shock move last week, Goal are reporting that former club Atletico Madrid have offered him a one-year deal with the option for a further 12 months in an attempt to fend off any other interest from across Europe.
In fact, Suarez’s international strike partner is now priced at 8/11 to make the move back to the Spanish capital.
With it confirmed earlier in the year that Borussia Dortmund would not be extending Mario Götze’s current deal, the 28-year-old rather left his second spell in rural Germany with a whimper.
Mustering just 21 appearances for BVB last season since returning after a three-year stay with newly-crowned Champions League winners Bayern Munich, he largely struggled to forge a place in Lucien Favre’s plans.
With his World Cup-winning exploits back in 2014 now a distant memory, the former superstar
has seen his career drastically set back by what seems like a never-ending list of injury issues and the 63-cap international is desperate to kickstart his career somewhere across the continent.
Still shockingly young and announcing that he believes his best years are still ahead of him, Götze has been linked with a host of European sides including Premier League outfit West Ham and Monaco.
However, while the playmaker is open to a change of scenery for his next adventure, The Daily Mail are reporting that Hertha Berlin are weighing up the possibility of offering Götze a chance to stay in his homeland.
A name that is familiar to many across England, Daniel Sturridge still finds himself without a new project and has made it clear that he is desperate to find a new home after leaving Turkish side Trabzonspor earlier this year.
With his surprise move abroad certainly not panning out as he had hoped, the now-former England international spoke to Sky Sports last month and made it clear that a return to the Premier League is at the top of his wishlist.
Only mustering 11 appearances out in Turkey before having his contract terminated by mutual consent, The Daily Mail are reporting that Sheffield United could be willing to offer the 31-year-old a shock return to England as a free agent.
With it no secret that Blades boss Chris Wilder is looking to strengthen his attacking options after what has been a worrying start to the 2020/2021 campaign, could Sturridge be the man to turn United’s fortunes around?
