The top six crashers?

Another season of Premier League action has come and gone and for the first time in three years, the top six was made up entirely of the traditional “big six” with Manchester City, Liverpool, Chelsea, Tottenham, Arsenal and Manchester United residing in those spots – despite four of those six not exactly having a campaign they’d call successful.

Today, we’re going to run through a handful of clubs who we believe could invade the top six once again next season as the weeks continue to tick by in anticipation of things getting underway in August.

West Ham

West Ham United were one final day slip-up away from beating United to sixth place and, really, they deserved to do so. The only major reason they didn’t is that they probably just ran out of steam which makes sense, given that they made it all the way to the semi-finals of the Europa League. With one or two more additions, they should definitely be back in the mix.

Leicester

Leicester were attempting to push forward and make a run at the top four in years gone by but that wasn’t the case this time around, as their Conference League campaign seemed to get in the way of things ever so slightly. The Foxes have stuck with Brendan Rodgers which feels like the right route forward, but they do need to be more active in the transfer window if they want to be in with a shout.

Newcastle

Newcastle United came incredibly close to a top half finish which is absolutely insane to think given that they were one of the favourites for the drop when Eddie Howe first entered the conversation. The Magpies are now one of the richest clubs in world football and as we’ve come to learn in recent times, that’s the kind of boost you need to turn into a superpower these days, alongside their insanely loyal fanbase.

Aston Villa

Aston Villa, all things considered, probably underachieved by slumping down into 14th place to finish the season. It was always going to be difficult losing Jack Grealish but they replaced him fairly well, and since Steven Gerrard has taken over, they’ve doubled down on their desire to spend big on transfers. If they can put together the final few pieces required to transform into a genuine squad as opposed to a handful of individuals, they’ll be top six contenders for sure.
