Scottish League Cup : St Johnstone vs Ross County

Date : 20 JULY 2019

Time : 22 : 00 PM

Match : St Johnstone vs Ross County

Analysis

These two sides will likely be fighting it out in the bottom half of the Scottish Premiership next term, but who will be able to get their first victory in early? The pair clash in the League Cup on Sunday, as they chase top spot. Ross County have mad great early strides, while the Saints are in need of a victory after losing their opener. Can the visitors add to a perfect record so far, or are we going to see them come up short as they meet their first fellow top-flight side this season?

St Johnstone were comfortably clear of the drop zone last season, finishing up in seventh after a solid campaign. While they may see a gap forming between themselves and the top half, the hosts will remain confident of another decent campaign across the league and cups. They were able to reach the last eight in this competition last year, but can they match that this season? A return to form is needed after Tuesday’s 1-0 loss at Montrose, but home surroundings should help the Saints.

Ross County seem on their way out of this group, following two wins from two in this competition. However, they’ve racked up two high scoring wins in clashes with low-ranked sides. They have a bigger test to come when they travel to St Johnstone, a team who are unbeaten in three at home to the Staggies, conceding just one goal in that time. Ross County didn’t have the greatest away record last term as they claimed Championship promotion, so how will they get on against a top-flight side?

The hosts may have lost back to back games in this competition, but they had produced a five-game unbeaten run before that. The Saints have been solid at home in the League Cup, with Celtic the only team to find the net here in this competition last term. They should do a better job of shutting down Ross County’s attack, while we expect them to give the Staggies a serious test.

St Johnstone finished the season well here, pulling off four wins and a draw in their final five games. With a good home League Cup record, we see plenty of reasons to be positive about the Saints going into this clash on Sunday. We think they can pull off a result against a Ros County side who haven’t been fully tested this term, so we are backing a home win as our tip for this clash.

The hosts are likely to make plenty of changes to their side following the loss at Montrose in midweek.
