Ligue 1 2020/21 Transfer Window Summary: Top 5 Signings

With the summer transfer window now closed, we look at the five top signings made by clubs in Ligue 1.

Mauro Icardi (Inter Milan to Paris Saint-Germain)

Mauro Icardi spent the 2019-20 campaign on loan at Paris Saint-Germain from Inter Milan. PSG had the option to make the deal permanent in the summer of 2021 for £59 million, and there was no surprise when the French champions decided to take it. The 27-year-old striker replaced Edinson Cavani in the team and was very good for the Parisian club. According to WhoScored, the Argentina international made 14 starts and six substitute appearances in Ligue 1 last season, scoring 12 goals and providing two assists in the process. The former Sampdoria man also scored five goals in seven Champions League games for PSG last season, while so far this campaign, he has scored two goals in four league games, according to WhoScored.

Danilo Pereira (FC Porto to Paris Saint-Germain)

PSG left it late, but they eventually got their man. Danilo Pereira moved to the French giants on loan from FC Porto with an obligation to buy. It is a €4 million loan fee and €16 million to buy. The 29-year-old is a very capable and experienced defensive midfielder who will make PSG better and stronger in the middle of the park. The Portugal international has won the Portuguese league twice with Porto, and the UEFA European Championship in 2016 and the UEFA Nations League with Portugal in 2019. Pereira could prove to be a bargain signing for PSG.

Jonathan David (Gent to Lille)

Jonathan David was linked with a whole hosts clubs before he moved to Lille from Genk in the summer transfer window. The 20-year-old forward is a hugely talented and promising young player who has already scored 11 goals in 12 appearances for the Canada national football team. The youngster progressed well during his time at Genk, and he is now ready to star in Ligue 1. According to WhoScored, the youngster scored three goals in seven Europa League games for Genk last season, although he has yet to find the net in Ligue 1 this season, having played six times in the division.

Michael Cuisance (Bayern Munich to Marseille)

Michael Cuisance looked set for a move to Leeds United in a £18 million deal from Bayern Munich. The Premier League club and the German giants had agreed on a fee, and Cuisance has travelled to Leeds to undergo a medical. It was then that the West Yorkshire club decided to pull the plug due to issues with a previous injury. However, there was no such problem days later when Marseille – who are rated at 40/1 to win the league title this season – signed the youngster on loan from Bayern. The Frenchman is a hugely talented player who would make Marseille stronger in the middle of the park and could prove to be a big signing for the club in their quest to challenge PSG for the Ligue 1 title and to make an impact in the Champions League this season.

Rony Lopes (Sevilla to Nice)

Rony Lopes did not have a great time at Sevilla last season, as he struggled for playing time and could not make an impact. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder will be determined to turn on the style for Nice, having joined the Ligue 1 club on loan from Sevilla in the summer transfer window. The Portugal international did well during his spell at AS Monaco, and he also had a loan spell at Lille in 2016-17. Under Nice manager Patrick Vieira, Lopes will be looking to get back to his best.
