Nunez, Haaland, Martinez – The Premier League’s most expensive new arrivals

With Manchester City and Liverpool set to face-off at the King Power this weekend in the Community Shield, the 2022/23 Premier League campaign is just around the corner.

Watching both Pep Guardiola’s and Jurgen Klopp’s men run an iconic title race last season, many are expecting another thriller from England’s top-flight this time around.

However, while the Premier League might get underway on August 5th when Crystal Palace welcome Arsenal at Selhurst Park, the summer transfer window is still open.

With managers from up and down the country putting together their final preparations, there have been some heavyweights arrivals who will be gracing England this season.

So, we have taken a look at who have been the Premier League’s most expensive new recruits so far this summer

Darwin Nunez – Liverpool

Although Liverpool might have been sad to see Sadio Mane make the move to German champions Bayern Munich this summer, the Reds were quick to reinvest in their front line.

While Darwin Nunez might have found himself under some minor scrutiny during Liverpool’s pre-season preparations, big things are expected from the 23-year-old this year.

Gaining plenty of plaudits with Benfica last season, the 11-cap Uruguay international bagged 34 goals for the Portuguese side in all competitions, including goals in both legs of the club’s Champions League quarter-final defeat to Liverpool in April.

Heavily linked with a move to West Ham back in January, Nunez’s arrival on Merseyside was announced last month in what is a club-record deal for Klopp’s former Premier League champions.

Paying Benfica a fee of £85million and putting pen to paper on a six-year contract at Anfield, can Nunez hand Liverpool the spark they will need to recapture their domestic crown?

Lisandro Martinez – Manchester United

With it finally announced back in April that Erik ten Hag will be taking charge at Old Trafford ahead of the 2022/23 campaign, all eyes will be on Manchester United this season.

While the Red Devils might have limped their way to a top-six finish last season, they only continued to show a string of defensive issues.

With continued pressure on the shoulders of club captain Harry Maguire, it was no secret that the ex-Ajax boss was desperate to bring in a new central defender.

Making it official on Wednesday that Lisandro Martinez had followed ten Hag to Old Trafford from his former club, the Argentina defender could have a vital role to play for United this season.

Watching the struggling Premier League giants break the bank as they paid Ajax a fee that could reach £57million, the 24-year-old has plenty of admirers from across Europe.

Martinez has won seven caps for Argentina and played once in the country’s successful Copa America campaign in 2021.

Erling Haaland – Manchester City

Although Nunez might have arrived in the Premier League as the priciest signing this summer, he isn’t the only striking superstar who will be gracing England’s top-flight this season.

In what was an announcement that sent shockwaves across Europe, defending champions Manchester City confirmed in May that Erling Haaland was on his way to the Etihad.

With many regarding the 22-year-old to already be one of the greatest number nines from across world football, Haaland continued to break records during his stay at Borussia Dortmund.

The Norweigan superstar racked up 86 goals in 89 games for BVB and has only continued to gain a fearsome reputation.

Paying the £51.2million release clause that was in Haaland’s contract at Dortmund, Guardiola’s side also had to fend off some serious interest in order to snap up his signature.

Heavily linked with the likes of Real Madrid and Barcelona, there is no doubt that Haaland’s arrival in Manchester is a real statement.
